Measles- the scratching, painful, and deadly virus, is back with a vicious kick across America.

In 2000, measles was declared an eradicated disease in the United States of America. Few cases of measles have been reported since then, and until just recently, the numbers have stayed reasonably low. Now, several states have found themselves with an increasing amount of diagnosed cases of measles.

New York in particular has been hit very hard. For the past twenty-six weeks, (six months) citizens of New York have been trying to contain the longest outbreak the US has seen since the disease was declared eradicated. The people of Rockland County, New York are starting to take extreme actions to stop the rapid spreading of this horrible disease. Health Officials in Rockland have prohibited those who are under eighteen and not vaccinated from visiting or staying in any public place. Experts claim, “It’s time to sound the alarm,” with New York reporting as many as 214 cases of the disease.

However, New York is not the only place suffering from this sudden rise in reported measles. Michigan has experienced a hit too, with twenty-two cases reported in Metro Detroit, and twenty-one cases have been reported in Oakland County. This is the biggest outbreak Michigan has experienced in twenty-five years. Among the other states who have also recently experienced extreme outbreaks are California, Illinois, New York, Texas, and Washington.

If bigger measures are not taken to improve this issue, the outbreaks will continue, as numbers across the country are still on the rise. However, measles can easily be prevented with a vaccination. The best thing to do is to stay healthy, and get the proper medications and treatment you need if you believe you’re ill.
