In three short years, Joel Embiid, a Cameroonian professional basketball player for the Philadelphia 76ers, went from playing amateur basketball in Yaounde, Cameroon to the third overall draft pick in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

This year, Joel Embiid signed a 148 million dollar contract with the Philadelphia 76ers for five years of playing. Currently, Joel is one of the league’s most successful players, with record breaking rebound and point scoring averages. He even led his team, the Philadelphia 76ers, to the playoffs for the first time in a decade.

Upon arriving in America, the basketball superstar didn’t know how to speak any English. Before being discovered in a basketball camp by NBA player Luc Mbah a Moute, a fellow Yaounde native, Joel Embiid had never been outside of Cameroon in his life.

Luc Mbah a Moute brought Joel Embiid back to Kansas and introduced him to some University of Kansas basketball scouts. Embiid was shy and struggled to keep up with the other players competing for spots on the University of Kansas team. Although Joel did not have as much experience on the court as the other players, he kept on working hard and never gave up. Such hard work ended up paying off as Joel received a scholarship to the University of Kansas to play basketball. However, he was recruited by the NBA in less than a year after he started college and ended up leaving the school in order to play basketball for his current team, the Philadelphia 76ers.

Other basketball players credit their success to natural talent and practice, but not Embiid. Joel says his success is all thanks to Basketball Without Borders, an NBA sponsored organization that selects the top 60 African players to travel throughout Africa in order to promote HIV prevention and youth leadership across Africa. Joel believes that working with Basketball Without Borders helped him find more love and appreciation for basketball, as he loved helping young kids who are growing up like he did learn the sport.

Joel Embiid has only been playing professionally for three years, starting in late 2015. His career is just beginning and it seems that great things are headed his way already.
