Scientists recently discovered a humongous species of rhino that lived more than 40,000 years ago. This species is scientifically referred to as Elasmotherium sibericum. However, it is more commonly known as the “Siberian Unicorn” because of its one large horn. This species of rhino was larger than any other rhino species that is alive today, but such large size did not save them from extinction. The species went extinct about 40,000 years ago as their natural habitats, grasslands, were destroyed. The Siberian Unicorns, like rhino species today, were very picky about their habitat.

Previous to this discovery, scientists speculated the species went extinct about 15,000 years ago, but new carbon dating proves that the species lived more than 40,000 years ago.

After this break through, scientists are now studying how the species went extinct in hopes of preventing the problem from happening again. Scientists are using this information to try and save the four species of rhinos left. Currently, rhinos are only living in nature reserves. They are dying because of poaching, which is the hunting or capturing of wild animals, and lack of natural habitat. Scientists and researchers are doing everything they can to save the rhinos that are still alive today. However, the rhino population is still dwindling.

Unicorns are creatures people imagine when they are young. Eventually, they categorize unicorns as make-believe animals. But rhinos aren’t make-believe. They are the real life version of those imaginations, but if things continue the way they are, unicorns really will only exist in daydreams. Unicorns are real, but they won’t be for long if we don’t do something to help them.
