A study released in the first week of September revealed that the Brazilian Blue Macaw, more commonly known as the spix, has officially gone extinct in the wild.

In the movie Rio, an adventure-comedy produced by Blue Sky Studios, a human girl, Linda, has a pet blue macaw, creatively named Blu. In the movie, Blu is taken by poachers during a trip to Brazil and meets fellow blue macaw, Jewel. The 2011 release was hoping to promote creating safe habitats for these animals and cracking down on animal poaching. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to save the wild blue macaws. In fact, scientists now believe the species died off in the wild around the year 2000. The last known blue macaw in the wild disappeared in 2001. Searches were done to find the remaining bird, however the macaw was never found.

Prior to extinction, blue macaws only nested in what are now rare caraibes trees, which are roughly 200 to 300 years old. Unfortunately, the trees weren’t only home to the macaws, but also many other predators. These predators, such as toucans and possums, are partly responsible for the birds going extinct as they would prey on nests and eat the eggs.

Currently, the spix is the world’s rarest bird. According to CBS News, some of the birds still survive in captivity and special breeding programs, however there are no longer any blue macaws living in the wild.
