The Year of the QB: that was the headline of this year’s 1st round of the 2018 NFL Draft. There were five quarterbacks taken in the first round of the draft, the most since the 1983 Draft, in which both John Elway and Dan Marino were taken in the first round, who both went on to have Hall of Fame careers.

“With the first pick of the 2018 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns select Baker Mayfield.” The quarterback from Oklahoma was somewhat of a surprise, as many experts felt the Browns would select Sam Darnold, the quarterback from USC. Mayfield has come a long way, as he first started as a walk-on at Texas Tech, soon became a Heisman Trophy winner, and was taken first overall in the NFL Draft just a few months after that. Although the Browns have had more than 25 starting QBs since 1999, and haven’t made the playoffs since 2002, they are hoping that Mayfield can help snap this “curse.”

With the 2nd pick, the New York Giants selected RB Saquon Barkley, from Penn State University. Barkley was considered the best football play in the draft, as he had a 41” vertical and ran a 4.40 40 yard-dash at the Draft Combine. Although the Giants may have made a mistake in not drafting a QB to replace aging starter Eli Manning, Barkley will be able to step into the starter role right away.

The Detroit Lions, with the 20th pick, selected Frank Ragnow. Ragnow is a center who attended the University of Arkansas. He played four years there before declaring for the NFL Draft. In college, he never gave up a single sack in all of his four years playing there. He was considered by many as the best center in this year’s draft class, and he will immediately help out the Lions and their running game, which was one of the worst in the league last year.

Overall, although 5 QBs were taken in the first round of the NFL Draft this year, there is no clear no. 1 out of the group. Any one one of those five could go on to have an amazing career, and any one of those could be a bust. That debate can go on, but most people will agree that Saquon Barkley is the best football player in this year’s draft class.
